Construction: The following considerations should be given to battery chargers (and packs)7 J! A3 v# f; Y! G, }. ?3 ~: R0 U
during the construction evaluation.' m0 H% p" A+ i
a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model

b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program7 ?- Y9 y8 g8 S

with power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery( g; V$ O# W* I: Q* R- F$ k- \
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully

b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be2 n o' N4 u4 r. b% r' Q4 _/ v
conducted with the battery charger charging battery packs that have been fully

c. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload

d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be; V2 S; x2 c8 \+ S1 ?: j
designed anticipating possible foreseeable fault conditions, including a short circuit of9 _6 }$ x; c2 S( j4 f
the battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the

Battery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into
$ U4 [1 }- h/ e5 Z3 jequipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery( _0 V. k* ]2 {; g$ t; L2 A
packs and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a
5 E' h2 n" W! W/ L3 Qhazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery
: g! q6 d g4 c1 y' ^( {+ lpack.
! h Z+ r/ \2 I! @1 B. g1 w& \4 WBattery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,. k( Y6 S; w! |2 v: ~8 Q
the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced# s, G0 K6 g1 f! Y: J) L S
during other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger& H0 }; Y6 K' p6 s
circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload
