The following are general construction and performance guidelines.

a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model
+ H* F+ X$ z& h5 o7 Y8 A9 z8 Nof ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;
( h, w7 O4 F, `b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for# K. [5 V! Q8 X; h& T6 s
which the battery charger is to be used;
/ N% B9 D: O3 e( k/ o+ Yc. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program

with power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery4 J5 [" Z. ^# O @: ?
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully
. I# I* |8 P0 v. }4 J* n7 Jcharged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;
; R6 z$ T. s8 l% k7 Zb. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be8 k1 g( J3 D2 |# b
conducted with the battery charger charging battery packs that have been fully

$ g" w3 T/ E, V# ~c. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload7 k1 W. _7 @1 {* ^1 s
(C1) Test should be conducted on the transformer that supplies the charging circuit.
$ H0 v q# n( f# K0 G' H* C9 _. Hd. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be# z( o! J5 T' T; D
designed anticipating possible foreseeable fault conditions, including a short circuit of
% I5 @7 X/ Z5 r+ m3 Uthe battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the( H/ q9 Q3 u' a% d- G5 `
charger input (if the battery charger input connector is not polarized).

Battery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into
7 `/ N4 N: t2 W! I {8 y+ Hequipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery& O1 x1 T7 \! e# h0 Y% a# F* i, T. i
packs and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a+ ^5 j& |4 s" `
hazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery7 ?# i2 C2 h: R9 T
pack.: Z1 e6 O9 `* ~: o! H
Battery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,
& t, o" N) z8 m& M: j7 Hthe transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced. f: r" x+ V3 t1 A ]$ h) P
during other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger! q4 Y' T! L' ^. U
circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload1 A! r y" t P6 }" g
test.
