The following are general construction and performance guidelines.

during the construction evaluation.7 m$ M- p/ Z! p8 `- T' x
a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model$ G: d& e7 i9 I2 t6 @% e5 Q7 h
of ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;' U; X5 u/ p* O2 K& s2 Z
b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for
. A# z/ F* g$ E& }. C- Wwhich the battery charger is to be used;2 h7 y3 b0 v7 q1 G1 X- G/ D
c. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program

8 ~& Y) F2 m2 v& D9 A' j' Zwith power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery& i6 {. n$ f$ Y* @7 q$ O
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully7 G4 x2 w6 ^: X2 X
charged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;
: \) v1 Z# P6 S. C/ `/ q/ \9 ]3 A( d" A0 Pb. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be

(C1) Test should be conducted on the transformer that supplies the charging circuit.0 Y$ K# ?1 D9 A) S
d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be
4 e& D0 `- Y+ [9 W0 i, Ldesigned anticipating possible foreseeable fault conditions, including a short circuit of
7 O* s w4 w0 _. k) c* zthe battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the
& C0 n% q$ H' x5 ] Icharger input (if the battery charger input connector is not polarized).3 m/ D7 M, H3 V7 O0 n
RATIONALE:
) j; H2 i" {9 J: o1 W, K5 NBattery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into1 i+ w, ?) \8 {! z O
equipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery( F' N' X$ a/ d, @0 e$ M
packs and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a2 j( k" t3 D! r; B1 j
hazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery. ]/ U1 @: B' Z) K/ {7 C y
pack.$ t5 O5 b1 n6 l0 }: ]5 c& l) U! {
Battery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,7 k( D2 W0 r1 D+ d2 x
the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced
5 {( d' @8 B# [% m9 I& s4 \during other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger! R0 R h5 I1 y/ y' Z- O+ V! }' s" h
circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload
% z1 r5 U* o. _. L7 Otest.
