The following are general construction and performance guidelines.. x* K: j+ }, e
Construction: The following considerations should be given to battery chargers (and packs)
* f1 P& Z/ N( F9 y) ` xduring the construction evaluation.$ }; x; q( \- a
a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model

b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for, H) W6 q N' o; }& Z+ u- j

c. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL R4 J! y5 y5 O/ k" e5 I

+ P4 f6 R( \4 L( |) vwith power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery( Q% n4 W+ T5 R$ H! W7 _! D2 q
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully
+ t* [' O) g% A* z9 n2 t( ccharged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;) I/ N+ Q% `7 _8 i
b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be

discharged;
3 Z. d6 }0 O+ b- Hc. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload

d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be

the battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the

RATIONALE:
1 R3 {* [$ E4 F6 s. iBattery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into
. M& \. h% Z: @equipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery) r9 ~& Y2 _% `3 W: O3 S
packs and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a
1 z$ {' f4 n( z6 Q4 Ahazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery
+ c1 R8 E5 A# `/ |1 Y% [/ n/ J& ^pack.
7 Z b- _7 a" |" V1 Z9 EBattery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,/ v0 p7 J2 ^2 }8 g' X4 v
the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced
8 l- k- A, F# _. C* s3 V, nduring other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger
* U9 Z8 x9 C' _circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload
