The following are general construction and performance guidelines. i, g% T5 O2 a( _
Construction: The following considerations should be given to battery chargers (and packs): U# \$ M: y5 ?% u: ^; }- ~
during the construction evaluation.
7 T2 F* k- j4 n+ g6 ma. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model o. a' Q* m9 x; a' j4 ]
of ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;
3 R% g' o7 h3 n+ U- v; t- u# ?b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for5 H! ^& `3 l6 ?, J
which the battery charger is to be used;
5 H7 H; ?& `0 t6 B* F' |4 fc. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL9 Z% H& g/ W/ l7 D

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program

with power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery
% u0 i5 Q+ E8 a: {charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully
: `8 Z6 t$ |' G4 ]5 Z/ {, _* Zcharged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;7 r; C1 r$ [/ b6 g5 r
b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be1 ?; X( M- V" a v$ h
conducted with the battery charger charging battery packs that have been fully# @' x# O4 T/ ~6 I* @) p0 |
discharged;
g5 n& v' b- j! D' |c. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload

d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be

the battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the
* a9 k( f# s2 j- X/ c4 }8 ncharger input (if the battery charger input connector is not polarized).

) `, u0 s" l' U+ G$ l% yBattery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into8 O D" F' _0 o: |) \) j+ y
equipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery
* p& P8 W& K% zpacks and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a
/ s; v. }' Z( P7 v- z, Z9 @ ~hazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery" B0 e3 ^2 r( s
pack.8 g7 e' b" ~+ P7 Q. J( g$ B
Battery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,
/ M: ?( e$ b* z3 W9 X+ `the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced& [$ |! U( P0 B* T% U8 B
during other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger
% w1 t8 E- }) w3 E" N/ Tcircuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload
" [; q( U5 B6 u$ Itest.
