40.1 General

relationship given in 39.2.2) that can appear across a cell or interconnect fracture is in the ²ARC TEST²
; ?( z% e8 o( e* O9 u( D% {zone in Figure 40.1, the module or panel shall comply with the provisions of 40.1.2 – 40.6.3. See also2 ^; N9 }. W6 J

40.1.2 With reference to 40.1.1, during conditions of simulated cell or interconnect fracture, there shall be

40.2.1 Similar modules or panels to be tested are to be connected in series to achieve an open-circuit
& Q% p6 _+ e# ?7 `: g: _2 A7 e5 Wvoltage across the fracture equal to that which is present during normal use of the modules or panels with
% Z. ~! Z8 P; qthe specified bypass diodes. The modules and panels are to be irradiated at 80 mW/cm2 or more at 20 –
* M( D: \7 Z, F0 [& I+ w30°C (68 – 86°F).- d( U1 X( H8 f
40.3 Method B0 ~0 W, K+ B" X
40.3.1 A single module or panel is to be used with a separate power supply as described in 40.5.2, Y# V( q! c2 C+ T8 w: l0 G9 V
connected in series to provide the remainder of the source. The module or panel under test is to be- e* m8 L: R; ~" w# c. D( P
irradiated at 80 mW/cm2 or more at 20°C – 30°C (68°F – 86°F)./ v  y* U; i, Y- m7 Y  S
40.4 Methods A and B6 Z1 E- U, K$ S7 c) s8 i- ]% ]
40.4.1 All bypass diodes, either included with the module or panel or described in the markings shall be
, Y6 s9 F: y! l3 oincluded in the test circuit.
& n% `: v$ W  ~$ k/ J+ [40.5 Method C$ b. G! C" s9 Q& A& ]
40.5.1 A single module or panel is to be used to provide the material for the ignition attempt. However,
& i- k% P6 `4 Y: ~. Q) zall power in the arc is to be provided by an external power supply as described in 40.5.2 connected in, k/ g, u$ @. z; B7 O$ L, m/ N
series with only passive portions of the module’s circuit. Cells are to be jumpered if necessary to involve
* K0 Y2 E- `4 \% l7 sspecific portions of the module or panel insulation system.& @. ~, p$ U5 v4 _
40.5.2 With reference to 40.3.1 and 40.5.1 the power supply is to be a constant voltage supply with a  q0 s. `& Q5 y; O+ }1 G' s* h
series connected current-limiting resistor. The parameters of the total system are to be as follows:
  E0 m1 O/ e  i$ j% a& l5 fa) Open-Circuit Voltage – The voltage that is across the fracture during normal use of the
3 b- Y3 i2 U8 O1 [9 vmodules or panels with the specified bypass diodes.
$ W2 Q  N9 ^% W: d- Ob) Short-Circuit Current – Not less than 80 percent nor more than the rated module or panel
- L( w% N: F, Pshort-circuit current, when the current-limiting resistor is adjusted so that the voltage across the( s# z* c+ T! s1 i8 X7 A
module or panel being tested is zero.4 i* x) V# [" m9 O9 q
40.6 All methods
# N/ _/ r3 h5 E7 D) `$ c  H40.6.1 The system load is to be a short circuit.
+ j+ D: o% G1 I! E6 I  J40.6.2 Any connection(s) within the module or panel may be broken (fractured). The breaks are to be3 G: C4 d; ]/ L1 j- X$ Q9 i
chosen to achieve a worst case condition of maximum open-circuit voltage and/or maximum short-circuit
( o$ j4 v7 x4 V1 m2 rcurrent at one of the chosen break points.
/ O. |4 q/ g" ]# x: ?Exception: Any electrical connection made with wire of circular cross section or flexible braided0 E: q( n+ {( P. P" w3 z' w0 C
construction that is mechanically secured to its connection points is not to be broken. Braided or stranded
! n/ M7 q" U6 z8 m2 {% k& Q* ^wire shall not have any process performed on it that reduces its flexibility. Solder coating of a portion of. r. }* x& Y9 K5 O
the wire at the connection points is acceptable.6 ~: o- b1 T( w2 h% W5 j) }
40.6.3 An arc is to be drawn across the breaks, with the arc across the material of the module or panel
0 w4 Y4 Q# Z0 n7 G, Q# {" hthat it might contact during use of the module or panel. The arcing is to be continued for 15 min at each2 d- R- ~3 y: g
location tested.
