Question: Due to possible harmful radiation, what requirements are to be applied to LEDs?; K, `/ V3 A, t
Decision: In principle, apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#). However
8 z2 c0 ?. s+ ]0 V; Uin order to avoid expensive measurements, luminaires provided with LEDs
+ ]) p8 q# ^2 y. Z6 mshould be treated as follows:9 |2 l1 k- K1 p# s9 q$ J
- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling
7 M+ `0 h. P6 V$ L& u1 ]3 Zpurposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to IEC/EN$ v2 y6 r, X8 B' E2 m+ n2 ?
60825-1 (*)-(#) and consequently there is no need for measurements. During the( P" ?' M0 ]9 s: T- _
judgement, the covers, optics and similar parts that can be removed by hand, shall be- n( E* D9 [( P! [! S& L
removed. In the TRF, it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply
* i! a5 Y/ ^0 |2 twith the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and that no" x5 V" V# c3 R3 v9 N2 I
measurement is made.
5 u5 K, Q. w, _; D; F- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration based( O% }; {9 O, s3 F
on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation from the6 O7 z0 b2 s& s6 y* y8 \
LED module does not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) for Class 13 b; l* B# P4 `& v
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF, it is indicated that judgement is based on8 v6 J1 ~- Q% w `. q
manufacturer’s declaration.
d2 w2 a3 r3 u0 k, ^- If such a declaration is not provided or if judgement not possible, the measurements
- S% G! W6 T& U, L; Agiven in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) shall be performed. In the TRF, it is indicated that
# g9 o+ `# `& l) mmeasurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources providing. c& S& n" y5 m- V. F
radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser source% i" ^2 y& }/ D
according to IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and comply with the requirements given in that

Information about the action taken in relation to the LED radiation should be provided in the
