Question: How to handle LEDs used in luminaires due to possible harmful radiation.
$ M# X7 |7 c1 ^7 EDecision: In principle apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1. However in order
3 M8 j: R; G3 u5 _to avoid expensive measurements, the luminaires provided with LEDs should be6 X( H- T- i4 A; o( w
treated in the following:* D! K  `# U7 b" Q" @3 \7 j
- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling
9 ~% v! }! _5 `( Jpurposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to
& q) ^/ s' H2 vIEC/EN 60825-1 and consequently there is no need measurements. During the
' r) ]( n. ^( x  w2 Rjudgement the covers, optics and similar, which can be removed by hand, shall be* R0 ^) M0 ?# |/ x$ o
removed. In the TRF it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply) E5 x5 T" t4 K3 d' |+ t! P% I
with the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 and no measurements are  y& i( Z; L- n" L
made.
8 Y& k$ @0 l) w# k- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration. m# G* ?4 `8 [9 q. l# s& z$ [
based on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation5 k( {& p! p4 E) D( j( i5 F3 J. M
from the LED module will not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 for Class 11 f3 w- L# L0 c+ L0 f5 f; t8 a
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF it is noted that judgements have been
3 k( ]8 e/ I$ m6 r; G7 n4 tbased on a manufacturer declaration.( L  U& ?& g3 O- o( o1 v% e- M  o
- If such a declaration cannot be provided or if we are insecure on how to judge, the
8 H6 {7 D- ]. [' nmeasurements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 shall be performed. In the TRF it is indicated# F* C6 f( {' j8 n6 w5 M
that measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources
3 i' }+ }2 w3 ~: v4 n2 lproviding radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser6 Y$ q& y8 V9 F( }1 c! i; B
source according to IEC/EN 60825-1 and comply with the requirements given in that
- W3 F4 N2 d! Q9 M* X+ Qstandard.
