29.1 Except as noted in 29.2, a pressure vessel having an inside diameter of more than 6 inches (152/ |1 a) G/ N7 p$ A* J
mm) and subject to a gauge pressure of more than 15 lbf/in2 (103 kN/cm2) shall be certified by the- w; ?# r# \" l' d  {7 P1 o: I
National Board of Boiler and Pressure-Vessel Inspectors and marked in accordance with the appropriate' h$ c" b- Q: S, n6 p! P- F( g/ K
boiler and pressure vessel code symbol of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) (²H²,5 y$ T) z( |) p, y8 C
²M², ²S², or ²U²) for a working pressure not less than the pressure determined by applying 29.3.: e, e# y  d/ a" q4 `, G* @  H
29.2 If a pressure vessel, because of its application, is not covered under the inspection procedures of3 |( O* Z" f, c( _/ l
the ASME code, it shall be designed and constructed so that it complies with the requirements in 29.3.
- S1 M& O. X* e$ H: z8 z. q' D29.3 Except as noted in 29.4 and 29.5, a part that is subject to air or vapor pressure (including the vapor
: N: l7 J8 H7 U# Zpressure in a vessel containing only a superheated fluid) during normal or abnormal operation shall' d. ?( H( L2 r# w" \. V8 G  k
withstand without bursting or leaking a pressure equal to the highest of the following that is applicable:8 D% h: n$ L, J! r4 @% L- O2 W* q
a) Five times the pressure corresponding to the maximum setting of a pressure-reducing valve# U+ i/ }% I( ^8 m! W
provided as part of the assembly, but no more than five times the marked maximum supply, C1 C- x, v, v8 m
pressure from an external source and no more than five times the pressure setting of a, T3 z% H; ~7 C3 L0 l
pressure-relief device provided as part of the assembly.8 `3 c( c  N% E+ J! i
b) Five times the marked maximum supply pressure from an external source, except as
! ~5 K! m" Y1 v4 Sprovided in (a).7 s0 b0 f) F6 u
c) Five times the pressure setting of a pressure-relief device provided as part of the assembly.
+ n; y" }4 N7 P$ ~d) Five times the maximum pressure that can be developed by an air compressor that is part of
9 a3 _/ y, [- H6 J0 z0 S6 Mthe assembly, unless the pressure is limited by a pressure-relief device in accordance with (a).
' A# K% p$ q3 K3 Y1 Qe) Five times the working pressure marked on the part.8 F: ^" s1 J. J' c6 t* g% O
29.4 A test need not be performed to determine whether a part complies with the requirement in 29.3 if
& {% F5 d4 |) ?" Ystudy and analysis indicate that the strength of the part is adequate for the purpose as a result of its3 y6 x3 r8 `+ t% [6 ^/ Y
material and dimensions – for example, copper or steel pipe of standard size and provided with standard
! a) W( P: N- }6 q: l8 x, b- \' ffittings might be considered to have adequate strength.
. b$ F1 ~1 w7 w6 d" s29.5 A pressure vessel bearing the ASME code inspection symbol (²H², ²M², ²S², or ²U²) is considered  g# M. A: g8 H- I7 Z/ f9 c! \
to comply with the requirement in 29.3 if the vessel is marked with a value of working pressure not less8 R' u8 z+ G* i7 Y6 T
than that to which it is subject during normal or abnormal operation.1 d5 d0 N' Q0 K* W' r+ i) S. _
29.6 If a test is necessary to determine whether a part complies with the requirement in 29.3, two samples) O! L: m. p, p8 K( V' Y! M+ w
of the part are to be subjected to a hydrostatic-pressure test. Each sample is to be filled with water as to" W2 J4 y1 U& L
exclude air and is to be connected to a hydraulic pump. The pressure is to be raised gradually to the2 W. [/ n5 s4 r; w/ V$ l6 I
specified test value and is to be held at that value for 1 minute. The results are not acceptable if either
+ h9 k! K) T) n$ o; n0 u3 [6 Zsample bursts or leaks, except as indicated in 29.7.& `) f* a  a& C5 e
29.7 Leakage at a gasket during the hydrostatic-pressure test is not unacceptable unless it occurs at a, Q8 y" g1 r& ]3 u
pressure 40 percent or less of the required test value.
$ s! z. K$ \! ]) a% t+ Q  m29.8 A means for relieving pressure shall be provided for all parts in which pressure might be generated
4 S) b* @  @) M* g8 Hin the event of fire.
+ l* U, T" o* s* ^" T) f* T29.9 Pressure-relief devices (see 29.15), fusible plugs, soldered joints, nonmetallic tubing, or other
; h) r" r0 {: j% }9 q. ?7 @; L+ a& F# Cpressure-relief means or the equivalent may be employed to comply with the requirements in 29.8.
' a% e6 K9 J2 R+ {, i0 s- M29.10 There shall be no shut-off valve between the pressure-relief means and the parts that it is intended- I$ J7 _1 |) p$ t3 M+ @) X
to protect.2 h7 y' l. i) ^( a7 ~* J6 j0 E( A: x- T
29.11 A vessel having an inside diameter of more than 3 inches (76.2 mm) and subject to air or steam4 }  J/ ?1 S6 V
pressure generated or stored within the appliance shall be protected by a pressure-relief device.3 l4 Q0 R" s7 x1 e" V
29.12 The start-to-discharge pressure setting of the pressure-relief device shall not be higher than the4 z' e3 |1 H0 K' _. ?$ m! C% d
working pressure marked on the vessel. The discharge rate of the device shall acceptably relieve the
# ^0 u7 z" w2 qpressure.+ I% U4 W2 ~/ R: l: v
29.13 A pressure-relief device shall comply with all four of the following:
$ \7 c) u! C: P7 b' a2 q5 Q% K3 W, va) Shall be connected as close as possible to the pressure vessel or parts of the system that it) Y4 C+ g1 V: N7 Z8 h8 C# @$ D; C: g6 i! s
is intended to protect;: D( `) w# N) x( _: a, Q" @8 e4 v
b) Shall be installed so that it is readily accessible for inspection and repair and cannot be! D% w- C) a' q
readily rendered inoperative;5 F' N: U4 O: F  D0 G
c) Shall have its discharge opening located and directed so that the risk of scalding is reduced/ ?- m7 i) o0 ]
to a minimum; and4 E+ Y* L/ h9 D& @
d) Shall have its discharge opening located and directed so that operation of the device does
! b  k# d5 w: h3 |not deposit moisture on bare live parts or on insulation or components affected detrimentally by
4 @9 H0 q" w% q+ r( mmoisture.
, l! U, w: r0 O29.14 A pressure-relief device having an adjustable setting shall be judged on the basis of its maximum, }: L% y" S: S
setting unless the adjusting means is sealed at a lower setting.
6 _6 ?& k8 g6 u) g29.15 A pressure-relief device is considered to be a pressure-actuated valve or rupture member intended$ n4 [* w; M, |; M1 U9 {/ H
to relieve excessive pressures automatically.4 v4 R4 B+ a0 ?- H9 t6 K% X
29.16 Where a pressure relief device is required, the control responsible for limiting the pressure in the. E3 ]9 P4 Y- E1 s2 s9 r% w
vessel shall be capable of performing under rated load for 100,000 cycles of operation and shall prevent3 w- Z' }% ~' M
the pressure from exceeding 90 percent of the relief device setting under any condition of normal
% y3 X9 W/ F% x( ~operation.
