Surge suppression varistors used in order to prevent MAINS overvoltages coming into the
" k* O$ J0 h8 Z, S2 Z [' Fapparatus shall comply with IEC 61051-2.1 M/ u( V; O- S2 c6 b9 O0 \
Such components shall not be connected between parts connected to the MAINS and& d$ J. r5 i% V9 R! P1 U
ACCESSIBLE conductive parts or parts connected to them, except for earthed parts of
: F0 @2 N+ w, c( J* U; PPERMANENTLY CONNECTED APPARATUS.

Reference is made to IEC 61051-2 where the following requirements apply:
9 B" \" n- R; G. \* d& U– preferred climatic categories (2.1.1 of IEC 61051-2)
& D8 i- S, F9 O, A maximum lower temperature: –10 °C
% O$ y9 i0 O( D6 e: Y) @- v, H4 X minimum upper temperature: +85 °C
! M6 Q9 Y/ S. r4 ]* o minimum duration of climatic tests: 21 days0 g2 ]7 f7 H; }4 O1 _" @
– maximum continuous voltages (2.1.2 of IEC 61051-2)

+ |- Q+ g6 Q( `3 J% A$ Q3 FThe minimum value of the maximum continuous a.c. voltage shall be 1,2 times the RATED1 X4 i$ B( m' M, f! I& L" g; ^+ L
SUPPLY VOLTAGE of the apparatus.
1 l( m7 T5 j2 B# L2 R; O1 E– current pulse rating (IEC 61051-2, subclause 2.1.2)* g0 Z2 w: h& e7 S0 @
) ?+ h( e( ^9 x. w4 |2 M0 lSurge suppression varistors shall withstand a combination pulse of 6 kV/3 kA with voltage( ?3 T3 ` H3 a" y& F
waveform of 1,2/50 s and current waveform of 8/20 s.3 Z- W5 N' c `' d

Compliance is checked by applying the test of IEC 61051-2, group 1. After the test, the4 v0 `# Q+ ~) f
varistor voltage (as defined in IEC 61051) shall not have changed by more than 10 % when
9 O* l' `3 n6 e2 Gmeasured with the manufacturer’s specified current.6 ~4 E. |/ w: K! z1 C( R d, d
– fire hazard (IEC 61051-2, table I, group 6)
! i9 a0 x, }0 w: `0 o7 h- L5 _& H; t N
The coating of surge suppression varistors shall have a flammability category V-0 or better
0 P) P6 Z' J7 |( D7 H' zaccording to IEC 60707.2 A0 ~. l$ z) K7 O5 o: |8 \. Z/ {
Compliance is checked according to IEC 60707 or according to clause G.1.1 of annex G., l- j- p, o. F( P" Q6 m* X- w
– thermal stress2 ^) {, }0 \4 l5 a( \
2 X0 j5 T% @+ k& k/ _0 {For apparatus with nominal MAINS voltage of <150 V, the apparatus and a test resistor
9 P. Q4 f: b6 ~# T9 H0 bconnected in series with the apparatus shall be energised from an a.c. source of 250 V./ U' f% r; t9 b/ E
The voltage source shall be applied for 4 h or until the circuit path through the varistor$ B% `; T; t9 z# J- h" w# `1 Q8 w
opens for each of the test series resistance values: 2 000 , 500 , 250 , 50 . A
" y4 A' i8 J2 g! }separate apparatus shall be used for each resistor value, unless damage from the previous8 ~ k% m9 k! G8 M! i
test has been repaired.& F% K5 q* [% Q7 |! F
At the end of each test, the apparatus shall comply with clause 11. |
