Surge suppression varistors used in order to prevent MAINS overvoltages coming into the
" k* O$ J0 h8 Z, S2 Z [' Fapparatus shall comply with IEC 61051-2.1 M/ u( V; O- S2 c6 b9 O0 \
Such components shall not be connected between parts connected to the MAINS and& d$ J. r5 i% V9 R! P1 U
ACCESSIBLE conductive parts or parts connected to them, except for earthed parts of
: F0 @2 N+ w, c( J* U; PPERMANENTLY CONNECTED APPARATUS.

Reference is made to IEC 61051-2 where the following requirements apply:

Compliance is checked by applying the test of IEC 61051-2, group 1. After the test, the4 v0 `# Q+ ~) f
varistor voltage (as defined in IEC 61051) shall not have changed by more than 10 % when
9 O* l' `3 n6 e2 Gmeasured with the manufacturer’s specified current.6 ~4 E. |/ w: K! z1 C( R d, d
– fire hazard (IEC 61051-2, table I, group 6)

The coating of surge suppression varistors shall have a flammability category V-0 or better

Compliance is checked according to IEC 60707 or according to clause G.1.1 of annex G., l- j- p, o. F( P" Q6 m* X- w

2 X0 j5 T% @+ k& k/ _0 {For apparatus with nominal MAINS voltage of <150 V, the apparatus and a test resistor

The voltage source shall be applied for 4 h or until the circuit path through the varistor$ B% `; T; t9 z# J- h" w# `1 Q8 w
opens for each of the test series resistance values: 2 000 , 500 , 250 , 50 . A
" y4 A' i8 J2 g! }separate apparatus shall be used for each resistor value, unless damage from the previous8 ~ k% m9 k! G8 M! i
test has been repaired.& F% K5 q* [% Q7 |! F
At the end of each test, the apparatus shall comply with clause 11. |
