( s0 c3 I+ i# s! K' u5 W2 h4 jActing NSW Fair Trading Minister Barbara Perry today called for parental caution and Commonwealth action following the international voluntary recall of children’s toys.

Ms Perry said this is the second major recall this month and affects toys including Polly Pocket toys, Batman and Barbie accessories, and a Sarge vehicle from the children’s movie CARS.

“The recall was introduced by Mattel following safety concerns over lead paint and loose, small magnets found in the toys, Ms Perry said. 8 u0 u8 ]* X, _4 Z( [. x0 R

“The Sarge toy is a green army vehicle and has been recalled because it may contain unsafe lead levels.4 f4 k- q4 `* B; B7 p
) X6 b# F6 @: \! ~$ z) d“Model numbers to look out for on The Sarge toy or assortments include H6414, M1253 or L6294 on their packaging. 5 }3 l; Y2 B/ z
5 [% e' b2 M+ i6 x9 }7 g8 Q“The toy is marked on the bottom with 7EA and was sold at toy retailers and supermarkets throughout Australia.”

The other toys covered by the recall were placed on the list because they may release small powerful magnets. They include a range of Polly Pocket toys, a Batman Figurine and a Barbie accessory.

“The magnets are dangerous because if they are swallowed the magnets could attract each other and cause life threatening problems like intestinal perforation, infection or blockage,” Ms Perry said.

( v* ?$ q* `% }1 [8 T“I urge all parents to go through their children’s toy chests to see if they have any of these toys and remove them immediately.

“Parents should contact Mattel to determine if their toys are affected and to arrange for the return of the toy and a refund of the purchase price.”+ n: J0 V) a2 N) _" b8 i- o& z
, P: x9 p! _/ a* w4 O- Y* QConsumers can contact Mattel Australia toll-free on 1800 674 753 between Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm (Australian EST) or log on to www.service.mattel.com to determine if their product is affected. Return of affected toys will be direct with Mattel and at Mattel's expense.

Ms Perry said Mattel was working with Australian retailers to identify and remove the affected products from the shelves.

“We are concerned about all products brought into Australia, no matter where they are manufactured and we want every consumer in NSW to be safe. : M3 S5 R. @! z* E

“That’s why Fair Trading has a comprehensive regime of systematic and random inspections of retail outlets.

“They need to ensure that unsafe products are stopped at our borders before they enter the country.
