; s0 y% ~8 K1 }0 U, tFor many years the only power distribution equipment investigated as ITE were computer power ^# l$ }8 Y# f9 I+ j! a
centers and similar power distribution systems that were intended for installation in computer7 m o3 m* n% D/ p
rooms. These large systems evolved from the power distribution systems that were originally
( O# H0 q$ S. W5 O. B, J* jintegral to large mainframe computers, where a single integral distribution transformers would
% l# I1 Z: `+ O8 rsupply power to several mainframe bays. However, as computer rooms and computers became8 e1 c# y7 Q2 [0 ^6 N
more sophisticated, these power distribution systems were designed into their own cabinets.* P+ p! V8 t% E3 t* w/ U$ a
This lead to a number of Code-based issues surfacing in the 1980s, in particular whether or not

distribution equipment with integral transformers used outside of computer rooms should not be9 o3 ^* C7 v7 W! Y$ l3 ], B3 L7 |, U
certified under NWGQ since additional requirements for separately derived systems must be

More recently, other power distribution systems associated with communications equipment, in
. Y7 K5 N, J% V# R; G% G' n# Dparticular that associated with centralized d.c., have been submitted for certification. Several
( F/ g7 p5 f4 v. D1 v& p qyears ago UL established a product category, QPQY, Power Distribution Centers for" `: c' k. H" n& g
Communications Equipment, specifically for covering the equipment associated with the primary
^" l5 ~0 P6 \) |and secondary distribution of the centralized d.c. This category requires compliance with IEC/UL
4 l. l e7 c% @60950 as its base set of requirements, but supplements IEC/UL 60950 with Subject 1801.
9 q6 _, O z" Z" U" kSubject 1801 is required because IEC/UL 60950 does NOT include all the needed requirements+ ^, l5 c" s, l: d/ B7 d2 ^- _$ x
to address the safety of constructions such as busbars that distribute very large power levels.

Smaller power strips and power distribution units used exclusively with ITE, which are often

both NEMA and non-NEMA power outlets, have traditionally been certified under NWGQ/2 and% t4 H# U" J/ N: Z2 J
may continue to do so since the requirements in IEC/UL 60950-1 are considered adequate for8 l* B3 G5 h8 R H
certifying these constructions.
