Question: Due to possible harmful radiation, what requirements are to be applied to LEDs?
! Q, @0 R) K9 r8 |Decision: In principle, apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#). However' R% g6 L! Z+ P: C4 {5 k+ q
in order to avoid expensive measurements, luminaires provided with LEDs
2 ^' G% t, C5 J) V' V; R& Vshould be treated as follows:
4 ^9 U6 k4 Z7 [, }" u6 {- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling9 U, {- r  z  q2 q5 m' ]9 i
purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to IEC/EN
; V9 `; w0 K7 y' V60825-1 (*)-(#) and consequently there is no need for measurements. During the6 T- }! t" e5 _( E9 F" I  `* V% ?
judgement, the covers, optics and similar parts that can be removed by hand, shall be' L. A* n% \. R* q+ f
removed. In the TRF, it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply
& I4 S, Q0 q* @with the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and that no
7 z! f4 D3 Y3 }& B3 [$ Mmeasurement is made.$ r% E1 E9 E) r4 I
- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration based
* X! L' U  s* e  h. \* d9 Qon relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation from the
2 ?0 X% t! D% k' iLED module does not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) for Class 12 i0 h* R# D" W
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF, it is indicated that judgement is based on0 g# n- c$ ?+ P+ u# w' w( E' _
manufacturer’s declaration.
, w+ _" A/ x$ @$ O- If such a declaration is not provided or if judgement not possible, the measurements; f: f0 T" f0 \
given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) shall be performed. In the TRF, it is indicated that2 h  X/ Z2 j7 Y5 n; _  r
measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources providing+ G& F6 w' l6 s* K( Q# h/ A6 z+ i
radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser source
$ ^" z" h. K9 H$ B" aaccording to IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and comply with the requirements given in that
