Question: How to handle LEDs used in luminaires due to possible harmful radiation.9 E. y0 M" c) v+ P7 j7 A% r% p  m
Decision: In principle apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1. However in order
% i, q; n) ?1 `; bto avoid expensive measurements, the luminaires provided with LEDs should be

- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling) W9 b( q+ Y. R8 X; D) A6 ]
purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to1 N, a* M5 H9 r4 C& X
IEC/EN 60825-1 and consequently there is no need measurements. During the1 O! F; U; h$ l: I
judgement the covers, optics and similar, which can be removed by hand, shall be
3 _0 C9 q# V' d, Z3 N. _4 Dremoved. In the TRF it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply& O1 R( n5 X4 V7 R& R
with the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 and no measurements are

- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration
. ]' F' m# Y2 p! t" q7 G0 o. Rbased on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation4 `7 Y' E* k2 S( c& d. ]5 k
from the LED module will not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 for Class 10 q' s. R5 f: \& \, \6 X
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF it is noted that judgements have been

- If such a declaration cannot be provided or if we are insecure on how to judge, the
' y2 }. e4 v& P* {measurements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 shall be performed. In the TRF it is indicated
& M  o/ M/ Z" `) \that measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources
! ^& i' L& V0 `! {* H. |/ Hproviding radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser
