So far as I know, the MOV (varistor or 压敏电阻) is used to solved the problem in Surge Test. In fact, the surge commonly appears across the AC inputs.Perhaps, you may think the operations of MOV similar toa very high power/ high voltage"ZENER DIODE" . That means the MOV clamps the supply line to a lower voltage when the surge occurs in the AC supply.
