California Proposes Amendments to Appliance Energy Efficiency Regulations

California has proposed two amendments to the California Code of Regulations, Title 20. These Appliance Efficiency Regulations were established in 1976 to reduce California's energy consumption and are updated periodically to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods. Twenty-one categories of appliances are included in the scope of these regulations.

The regulations apply to appliances sold in California, except those sold wholesale in California for final retail sale outside the state, and those designed and sold exclusively for use in recreational vehicles or other mobile equipment.

Under this amendment, the proposed changes will be incorporated to address energy efficiency of general service fluorescent lamps (bulbs), reflector and general service incandescent lamps.Applicability is expanded from torchieres, metal halide and under-cabinet luminaires to include portable luminaires (portable table top and floor lamps). The proposed regulations for portable luminaires will include requirements for incandescent bulb replacement. Options specified in the regulations are acceptable for portable luminaires as of January 1, 2010.

CEC-400-2008-021-15DAY
This amendment would make changes to requirements for external power supplies to bring the CEC-400 into agreement with marking requirements of ENERGY STAR Program for Single Voltage External AC-DC and AC-AC Power Supplies version 1.1. This change will help alleviate confusion regarding product efficiency classifications.
